Navy Football suffer 38-35 loss on Senior Day

A disappointing season continued for the Navy Midshipmen as they lost 38-35 against the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday.

On Senior Day, Navy had put themselves in a position to win when freshman Maquel Haywood returned a kickoff 98 yards to give the Mids a 35-28 lead with around 8 and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter.

ECU QB Holton Ahlers responded with a 28 yard TD pass to tie the game.

Navy wasn’t able to run out the clock and punted with around a minute and a half left. And a defense that had forced just one punt all game couldn’t get one final stop. The Pirates then completed a 46-yard pass that set up a game-winning 54-yard field goal by kicker Owen Daffer.

The defense not being able to stop the Pirates was an issue all game long as Ahlers threw for over 400 yards and 3 touchdowns in the game while ECU had over 560 total yards of offense.

The loss wasted Navy’s best offensive performance in over a month as they more than doubled their scoring average of 16.8 points and totaled 382 yards, the team’s second-highest of the season.

Navy next plays at Temple next Saturday, November 27th.
