The Navy Midshipmen made a second-half comeback, as they beat the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 20-17 Friday night.
QB Tai Lavatai scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown with 11:25 in the 4th quarter to put Navy up 17-10. The TD capped off a 15 play, 80-yard drive that lasted over 8 minutes. Lavatai had a career-high 64 yards rushing as Navy totaled 302 yards on offense, all of it coming on the ground.
Tulsa’s Anthony Watkins had himself a night, totaling 162 yards of offense by himself while scoring Tulsa’s first kickoff return TD in almost a decade.
But the best and most important play of the game belonged to Navy’s Rayuan Lane. Lane got beat on a passing play in the end zone but the receiver had the ball bounce off his knee and a diving Lane secured it with one hand in the end zone for a game-changing interception. The subsequent drive by Navy was the 80-yard TD drive to take the lead.
The wain was Navy’s first on the road this season and broke the team’s three-game losing streak. The Midshipmen are now 2-6 on the season.
They next travel to South Bend to take on the currently #11th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
