(Baltimore, MD) WNAV — A social worker pleaded guilty to felony medical fraud and was sentenced to 3 years of probation in Anne Arundel County circuit court on Monday, Dec. 13, 2021. 38-year-old Elkridge resident Irene Carroll pleaded guilty to submitting claims to Maryland’s Medicaid seeking reimbursement for mental health counseling sessions that never occurred. She reportedly defrauded the system of over 16 thousand dollars, which she paid back at the time of her guilty plea. The licensed social worker operated a private mental health counseling practice through which those claims were submitted from 2014 through 2018 according to Maryland attorney general Brian Frosh.
