Alarming COVID-19 Positivity Rate Reported by Maryland Health Department’s First New Testing Data in Weeks

Annapolis, MD (WNAV) — The covid-19 test positivity rate in Maryland is now above 10%, and the positivity rate is at 15% for all tests administered on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021. This comes after the Maryland Health Department’s ability to report COVID-19 numbers was hampered by a network security incident on Dec. 4.

90% of state surveillance data for confirmed cases, positivity rate, and other testing data was restored on Monday, Dec. 20. New data shows that over six hundred thousand Marylanders have had cases of the coronavirus since the onset of the pandemic, and new cases will once again be reported by the Maryland Department of Health once every 24 hours. Hospitalization data, which has been at full capacity for some time, shows 88 new hospitalizations within 24 hours. A total of 1345 Marylanders were in the hospital with cases of COVID-19 on Monday morning.

The health department assured Marylanders that it is working as quickly as possible to restore its ability to report death totals and track cases by jurisdiction as quickly as possible. According to the health department, officials are also working to get state surveillance data back up to full capacity.
